30 Years of Finance and Bankruptcy Law Experience
With almost 30 years of financial experience in Manhattan and internationally, Kathleen Cully helps clients find the debt relief they need.
Her many years of participating in workouts and bankruptcies, familiarity with the principles, provisions and practice of consumer and business bankruptcy law and analysis of developments in bankruptcy and lender regulatory law have given her a broad and detailed understanding of the financial system that she uses to find the best solution for her clients and to make this difficult process as easy as possible. Having negotiated simple agreements and complex financial documents in New York and internationally, she has learned how to work with opposing parties who may have very different cultures and goals to achieve the best result for her clients.
Prior to opening her own practice, Ms. Cully served as the General Counsel for the bond insurers CIFG and ACA Capital, was the Deputy General Counsel of FitchRatings (one of the top three rating agencies) and held several senior positions at Citigroup, giving her the advantage of knowing creditors' business model and framework for handling consumer debt and consumer bankruptcy. She knows that it's better for lenders to work out problems than to force a consumer into bankruptcy; she also knows that bankruptcy is good for lenders as well as consumers, since it allows consumers to return to the credit marketplace, rebuild their credit and participate in a productive economy, She has also worked with insurance and bank regulatory agencies, so she's familiar with their approach to lender and consumer finance.
She began her legal career as an associate with the leading New York law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. She received her Juris Doctorate from Yale Law School, where she was an Articles Editor of the Yale Law Journal.
Ms. Cully is active in the legal community. She is a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys, the American Bar Association, the New York State Bar Association and the New York City Bar Association, as well as the Association of Corporate Counsel, the Association of Small Claims Arbitrators and the American Securitization Forum.
Ms. Cully is also committed to public service. In addition to serving as a director and secretary of the nonprofit Opera Company of Brooklyn, she volunteers with the New York City Bankruptcy Assistance Program and the New York City Civil and Housing Courts and acts as an arbitrator in the Small Claims Court.
